i) Article Summary
The article highlights an increasing need for business leaders to shift away from blindly adhering to HR trends and instead focus on fundamental people strategies. Although diversity, wellness, and wellbeing initiatives are important, the article cautions that an overemphasis on these areas has led to talent management and succession planning being neglected (Rimmer, 2023). For example, such insight contributed to high employee turnover particularly in the post pandemic great resignation, when professionals looked for better career development opportunities.
Today, organisations are now in a candidate-driven job market, where employees place a higher value on growth and learning opportunities as opposed traditional benefits. The article contends that investing in employees, through structured learning and development (L&D) programs, is vital for retaining and achieving long-term success (Rimmer, 2023). Without career progression, employers stand to lose their best talent in two years, particularly Generation Z workers. Ultimately, business leaders with support from HR need to go back to basics by ensuring that talent strategies are comprehensive with emphasis on internal growth as part of broader HR initiatives.
