Purpose of Onboarding
Onboarding is the process of welcoming new employees in an organisation, educating them about the company culture and what is expected of them (CIPD, 2022b). It seeks to assist its employees to get along with the work environment, to be in line with the organisationss values and to also learn the skills meant for their roles. Onboarding can also help to engage employees, raise confidence and boost productivity, as skills and tools essential to success are provided. Onboarding is a strategic opportunity to provide a positive first impression, shorten a new hire’s time-to-productivity, and set new hires up for building strong relationships among new hires, with their colleagues, and with their managers (NeSmith, 2025). Benefits of Onboarding Improved Effectiveness in Role: Successful onboarding means that new employees at ParcelCare get to know their roles, company processes, and performance standards within the first few weeks of their employment. This minimises the time taken before an employee can start contributing towards the goals of the organisation effectively (Griffis, 2022). For delivery drivers, it is possible to design specific training programs for route planning and customer relations to improve the service. The guidance and support given during the onboarding process also reduce the chances of making mistakes and boost confidence, thus enhancing the feeling of competence. This means that ParcelCare will be more efficient, and the customers will be more satisfied, thus giving the organisation a competitive edge. Introduction to and Appreciation of the Organisation’s Culture and Norms: Onboarding helps new employees to understand the values, mission, and norms of ParcelCare hence aligning their practices with the values of the organisation. This way, employees are aware of the company’s objectives and hence they can work towards achieving them (Bradshaw, 2024). For example, drivers who understand that ParcelCare values timely deliveries and good customer relations will also embrace these values. Cultural integration also helps in avoiding cultural conflicts, encourages team spirit, and creates a positive working relationship. Retention and Reduced Employee Turnover: Having an effective onboarding process is crucial to ensuring a good transition into the organisation and deals with the uncertainties of being a new member of the team, increasing employee retention in the process. ParcelCare stands to see fewer turnover rates and therefore lower recruitment and training costs when new hires feel valued and have been properly prepared in their roles (Crail, 2024). Additionally, maintaining experienced staff will keep service from being interrupted and keep high work standards, which further enhances ParcelCare’s reputation as an employer of choice.

(Solution) CIPS New Global Strategic Supply Chain Project
- The purpose of this project is to evaluate supply chain automation by leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies. The identified technologies include Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) noted as critical for streamlining operations and obtaining value-for-money outcomes. This has been pursued by focusing on Wood Plc.
- To conclude, the generated findings of this report evidence WPC is today adopting the application of iSourcing in their procurement and supply management (PS&M).
- In the current project, through an evaluation of options for automation of the organization PS&M, the findings evidence the existence of different limitations hindering the success of their system. The issues of cost overruns, lack of collaboration, and inefficient supply chain as the organization is expanding its current operations have been noted to include limitations of their current sourcing.
- Success in the automation of their supply chain has been identified to lead to the following outcomes;
- Organisation achievement owing to automation of their supply chain, increased confidence and capability, talent management, and employee competency
- Improved stakeholders relations (a later section of stakeholders analysis) easing the change process. Through the iSourcing improvement, WPC would be in a position of harnessing technical and commercial evaluation processes.
- Increased and robust systems and policies which mitigate overall gaps in sourcing system transformation
- Today, only lower than 10% of the entire WPC resources are used to prioritize automation and IT integration successfully. Automation would improve the use of resources in their operations
- Involve their IT and finance departments to ensure within a period of 6 months they
- WPC needs to consider embracing sustainable practices as part of investing in their Industry 4.0 technologies
- Through the adoption of automation, better communication systems backed by AI and ML would be introduced to achieve 70% increased communication effectiveness.
- It is important to increase this through increasing collaboration and alignment of all their interests holistically
- Partnering with institutions for the provision of capacity development opportunities for the PS&M teams and other organizations for the success of the automation process
- Expanding their sourcing of Industry 4.0 technologies. This is to involve highly reputable global companies hence efficient operations and integration of AI
- Source of support from the government to ensure that they are facilitated in terms of policies and appropriate regulations to guide the automation process.
