Explanation: I understand that handling complex issues and managing risk in decisions are difficult, yet according to Bader, Schuster, & Dickmann (2020) it is important behaviours to develop in others. Taking ownership when things go wrong can be challenging, yet essential for learning and growth as mentioned by Hodges, & Crabtree (2020). I have become more aware of the importance of these behaviours, and I intend to continue to practice and develop them in myself and others. I need to learn and reflect on to take responsibility and ownership for my actions and decisions, as well as ensure others do the same as Gupta (2020) recognized. I want to manage risk and work on making sure I am prepared for any potential challenges that may arise. |
| Development objectives | I need to:
1. Understand how to manage risk in decisions, take into account multiple factors such as timelines, resources, and available data. 2. Acquire critical thinking skills to quickly identify potential issues and develop strategies to mitigate them. 3. Enhance interpersonal skills to effectively communicate complex decisions to stakeholders and build consensus where necessary. |
| Importance to me | Important because decision-making on complex issues is important as it helps to ensure that the best possible solution is chosen. Taking ownership to remedy mistakes is important as it shows responsibility and accountability which can help to build trust. |
| Learning plan (with dates) | 1. Explore books, articles, and other resources related to complex issues, risk management, and developing behaviours in others. Make a list of topics I need to learn more about in each area and select one or two books or articles to read each week to build my knowledge and understanding. [July-October 2022]
2. Connect with mentors, peers, and other professionals who can provide advice and guidance as I work through plan. [January 2023] 3. Identify where I need to take ownership and develop a plan to address any issues that may arise. This could include to recognize and address mistakes quickly, developing a system to track progress and progress on tasks, and actively seeking feedback from colleagues and other stakeholders. [January 2023] |
| Potential ways to evaluate competence | 1. Evaluate own performance on handling complex issues, managing risk in decisions and developing these behaviours.
2. Ask for feedback from colleagues, mentors and other stakeholders who have worked on similar projects. 3. Observe myself in action during meetings and discussions and take notes on how I can handle complex issues, manage risk in decisions and develop these behaviours. |
| Possible threats | 1. Overreliance on Expertise: Overreliance on expert opinion can lead to decisions being made without considering all relevant facts or the opinions of those affected by the decision.
2. Groupthink: Groupthink can lead to decisions being made without considering alternatives or dissenting opinions. This can limit creative thinking and lead to poor decisions. |
